Post-performance discussion with company members, The Moore Theater

All the moves are there: breaking, spinning, locking and popping, but the all-male French troupe Käfig has polished hip-hop into a dazzling choreography of “precision and rigor...[in this] stunning work” (The New York Times). Founded and directed by circus-trained Mourad Merzouki, this ingenious company merges street culture with high art, techno beat-box rhythms with North African flourishes, b-boy moves with ballet. In Récital, Merzouki creates a synthesis of divergent worlds, a hip-hop concerto, a surreal theatrical experience with exquisite lighting, novel score and dance so original it really has no name. It's an experiment in dance with “spectacular feats...a new strain of hip-hop—beautiful and meditative” (Dance Magazine).

This performance is supported in part by AFAA (Association Française d'Action Artistique) and The Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States.
