Strike up the Band! And the Wind Symphony does, with its opening piece of that title by seminal American composer George Gershwin. Performing concert music influenced by the rhythms and melodic elements of Jazz, the DWS delves into the origins and offshoots of the music that grew out of the American experience. Renowned trumpet player and conductor Ron Modell performs some special charts with the Wind Symphony and special guest, Dartmouth's own Barbary Coast Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Don Glasgo, including selections from Bernstein's unforgettable West Side Story, Robert Bennett's Suite of Old American Dances, a collection of Quincy Jones pieces and Morton Gould's trumpeting Jericho Rhapsody. Jazz meets classical concert music in this swinging celebration of ever-evolving musical forms.
