In its spring concert, the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra explores cultural connections and divergences in music influenced by Latin American and Spanish themes. The vivacious rhythms of Caribbean music are reflected in works by two American composers: George Gershwin's Cuban Overture and Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from what is often considered the greatest American musical, West Side Story. The intense orchestral color and dramatic power of Spanish motifs are captured by two French composers, Édouard Lalo in his most celebrated work, Symphonie Espagnole in D minor for violin and orchestra, featuring in this performance Canadian-born violinist Tereza Stanislav, and in Emmanuel Chabrier's famous España. Experience the expansive spirit of Spain and Latin America when the DSO turns up the heat!
