In their first Halloween concert ever, the Chamber Singers send shivers down your spine, fear into your heart and phantoms to your psyche. So sit back…relax…and prepare to enter…the dark side! J.S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor shapes the mood with its ominous, thunderous chords. Jaakko Mäntyjärvi's Four Shakespeare Songs—“Come Away, Death” from Twelfth Night, “Lullaby” from A Midsummer Night's Dream, “Double, Double Toil and Trouble” from Macbeth and “Full Fathom Five” from The Tempest—bubble with frenetic energy and otherworldly sonorities. William Schuman's Carols of Death, set to poems by Walt Whitman, mirror the many faces of death, ending with the cacophonous shriek: “Strong is your hold, o mortal flesh!” And Donald Patriquin's Epitaphs, lifted from English tombstones and set to a medieval Christian plainchant, relish the humor of some of the departed, and remind us their quipping authors are no more!
