William Schuman's Carols of Death, set to poems by Walt Whitman, mirror the many faces of death, ending with the cacophonous shriek: Strong is your hold, o mortal flesh! And Donald Patriquin's Epitaphs, lifted from English tombstones and set to a medieval Christian plainchant, relish the humor of some of the departed, and remind us their quipping authors are no more!
