Haunting, serene and magnificent, Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil (Vespers) blends ancient liturgical texts with stirring melodies, rich bass lines and transformative expressions of spirit and awe. Quintessentially Russian and often considered Rachmaninoff's finest work, this choral masterpiece draws on forms of chant as old as the 14th Century, while incorporating modern elements. Written in 1915, the All-Night Vigil reprises the Russian Orthodox Church's service that includes all three canonical hours: Vespers, Matins and First Hour. Gorgeous and glorious, this monumental a cappella work captivates listeners with its prayers, psalms and hymns celebrating the Creator.
