Dartmouth Symphony OrchestraAnthony Princiotti, conductor Saturday, NOVEMBER 17 8 pm The DSO launches its '07/08 season with three beloved German Romantic works. Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture (or Fingal's Cave) was inspired by the composer's visit to Scotland in 1829. When he came upon a particular sea cavern, he was so moved by its dramatic features that he wrote this lyrical piece portraying the movement and mystery of wind and sea. Schumann's only Piano Concertoin A minoroften considered his crowning achievement, is a splendid reflection of his own character, with frequent changes in tempo and tonality that convey both happy and heroic moods. Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major has been called The Apotheosis of the Dance for its driving rhythms that build to monumental force. Harnessing and reinventing classical traditions, he created music of a power and scope that was revolutionary for its timeand beyond. |
