Old School Freight Train, a Virginia-based quintet with “the chops to dazzle” (Chicago Tribune), blends pop-fueled bluegrass with soulful jazz improvisations and Celtic and Latin rhythms. OSFT plays crowd-pleasing standards, musically daring originals and even funky Stevie Wonder covers. They share a bill with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a trio of young musicians reviving the rich African-American string-band tradition of the rural North Carolina Piedmont, once in danger of dying out. Performing with joyous abandon, the Chocolate Drops reinvigorate these age-old tunes.

Part of Class Divide, a three-year Hopkins Center initiative examining social and economic class issues.

This project is made possible in part by a grant from the Association of Performing Arts Presenters Creative Campus Innovations Grant Program, a component of of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
