Dartmouth Chamber SingersDr. Robert Duff, conductor Passionwith special guest The Arcadia Players Friday, FEBRUARY 22 8 pm In three choral masterworks, the Chamber Singers give dramatic voice to themes of love and loss, duty and despair. The 17th-century Italian composer Carissimi daringly combined new operatic forms with sacred subjects in his inspired oratorio Jephte. Based on an Old Testament story, it tells of a warrior who vows to sacrifice the first person he meets after a battle if God assures his victory, not thinking that person would be his only daughter. Contemporary American composer Norman Dinerstein's 1975 When David Heard is a setting of text from the Second Book of Samuel. With a stunning range of choral styles from monody to eight-part textures, it memorializes King David's grief over the death of his rebellious son Absalom. Johann Sebastiani's 17th-century Passion According to St. Matthew also invokes high drama and emotion in commemorating the last days and inevitable death of Jesus.
