Few companies in the world combine superb dance, jaw-dropping theatricality, and fine-tuned political consciousness with the wallop of one-of-a-kind DV8 Physical Theatre. Formed in 1986, the UK-based company has produced 15 highly acclaimed dance/theater pieces that have toured internationally, as well as five award-winning films for television. In DV8's latest work, To Be Straight With You, Artistic Director Lloyd Newson leads a multi-ethnic cast in a poetic but unflinching exploration of tolerance, intolerance, religion and sexuality. Based on hundreds of hours of audio interviews collected throughout the UK with people directly affected by these issues, To Be Straight With You incorporates dance, text, documentary, animation and film to create “a stirring, possibly angering and sometimes saddening collage of views and stories from a small army of people embodied by nine multitalented performers…It is human feelings and political themes—fear, courage, hatred, injustice, invisibility, compromise—that matter the most here” (London Times).
