Two thousand years before Columbus landed in the Americas, Polynesian ancestors of the Maori people left their homeland, sailing across the vast blue Pacific in canoes—guided by waves, winds and stars—to the South Pacific islands of New Zealand (or Aotearoa, The Land of the Long White Cloud). So goes the Maori legend, one of many dramatized by the evocative indigenous music and dance of New Zealand's Maori Dance Theater, Kahurangi (“a cloak from Heaven"). Whether portraying myths and battles or performing oceanic chants and dances, these artists capture the power and beauty of Maori customs and rekindle the ihi or life force of their ancient culture. Catch this vivid glimpse into the history of a Pacific people who trace their heritage to the beginning of time.
