Audiences for The Fortune Teller sit on The Moore Theater stage itself—the better to experience at close range this gleefully ghoulish morality fable for grown-ups. New York-based artist Erik Sanko's marvelously creepy handcrafted marionettes tell a tale of seven unusual characters who are invited to the reading of the will of a late millionaire industrialist. One by one, they get what's coming to them, but not what they expect. The set, an exquisitely detailed Edwardian mansion, is a marionette itself, with moving parts controlled by puppeteers and opening to reveal new dioramas. Sanko, of The Lounge Lizards and Skeleton Key bands, wrote the eerie score with Oscar-nominated composer Danny Elfman (of The Simpsons and Batman fame). “The craftsmanship of the entire production astounds…[a] grandly satisfying piece of theatre in miniature” (Backstage).
