Spain's tempestuous flamenco tradition embodies memories of past centuries while celebrating the mystery of life in a firestorm of staccato heels, rhythmic claps and insistent vocals. Noche Flamenca's illustrious Soledad Barrio—in intensely personal, passionate movements—“dances as if possessed by the spirit of a Gypsy encampment…She breathes the essence of flamenco” (The New York Times). Her husband Martin Santangelo, director of this famed Madrid-based troupe, distills authentic flamenco into a fierce drama driven by raw emotion, gutsy moves and intricate Spanish guitar. Attracting sellout crowds across the U.S., Europe, South America and the Middle East, Noche Flamenca embraces flamenco puro, the ancient, defiant dance with death and danger that's “as spare and full of secrets as a desert night” (Newsday).

This performance is funded in part by the Expeditions Program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, which receives major support from the National Endowment for the Arts with additional support from the state arts agencies of New England.
