The string quartet Brooklyn Rider has travelled all over the world with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project, bridging cultural divides by exploring multinational music traditions. The ensemble's Hop appearance fluently spans classical and contemporary music: they perform the ravishing Debussy String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10; Philip Glass's rarely performed String Quartet No. 4 “Buczak;” and the traditional Persian song Ascending Bird, arranged by Brooklyn Rider violinist Colin Jacobsen and noted Iranian composer/performer Siamak Aghaei. The quartet also premieres the Dartmouth-commissioned what falls must rise for string quartet, shakuhachi flute and technology, by Kojiro Umezaki, a '93 graduate of Dartmouth's Electro-Acoustic Masters Program. Bringing youth, energy and adventurous variety, Brooklyn Rider imbues a classical art form with “a rawness and verve that was gripping....beautiful listening” (Newark Star-Ledger).
