With spellbinding, crystal-clear voice and luminous expressivity, Mariza is one of today's leading interpreters of fado, often called the “blues of Portugal.” Born in Mozambique and raised in Lisbon, Mariza began singing these melancholy story songs before she could read. Among the locals, she learned old and new songs in the genre she describes as “emotional…full of passion, sorrow, jealousy, grief and often satire.” Since her first recording in 2001, Mariza has built an international following, with her most recent album released in over 35 countries throughout Europe, Latin America and North America. Accompanied by her guitar trio in this return Hop engagement, Mariza embodies the fado tradition while refashioning it for the contemporary world.
