Through his prolific output of operas, symphonies, compositions for his own ensemble and wide-ranging collaborations with noted visual and performing artists and filmmakers, Philip Glass has had an extraordinary impact on the musical and intellectual life of his times. He is widely acknowledged as having popularized new music while challenging assumptions about form and expression. This Hop appearance focuses on his chamber works. Glass on piano is joined by internationally renowned cellist Wendy Sutter and longtime collaborator, percussionist Mick Rossi. They perform works spanning nearly 30 years, including excerpts from film and theater scores, solo piano études and Songs and Poems for Cello (2007), written for Sutter. Indicative of the richness of Glass's music as the composer enters his 70s, Songs and Poems “is deeply Romantic in spirit, and at the same time deeply Baroque…a major work, and a major addition to the cello repertory” (San Francisco Classical Voice).

Made possible by the Marion and Frederick '53 Whittemore Distinguished Artist Series Fund.
