Hear an interview with members of eighth blackbird on NHPR's Word of Mouth

Grammy-winning new-music ensemble eighth blackbird shows off its renowned technical finesse and theatrical flair in compelling, diverse works by many of today's most exciting composers. In her luminously beautiful Immutable Dreams, young New Yorker Kati Agocs spins a web of sensuous lyricism that strikingly contrasts with the brilliant textures of Franco Donatoni's colorful Arpege. Stephen Hartke's Pulitzer Prize-nominated masterpiece Meanwhile evokes music from an imaginary Asian court with the help of invented percussion instruments. Thomas Adés depicts a hilarious musical seduction in Catch, while Les Moutons de Panurge by Frederic Rzewski demonstrates the ensemble's special knack for that maverick master's music. “It would be hard to think of a more congenial pairing of composer and performer” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Presented in conjunction with the Music Department's 31st Annual Festival of New Musics.
