The Barbary Coast, led for 33 years by educator/composer/trombonist Don Glasgo, is the student jazz ensemble of Dartmouth College, specializing in African-American and Afro-Caribbean jazz traditions. The award-winning group has performed with numerous outstanding guest musicians, including such big names as Jimmy Bosch, Julius Hemphill, Arturo O'Farrill, Manny Oquendo, Eddie Palmieri, Sam Rivers, Max Roach and Sun Ra. The Coast has also performed off-campus, including at EXPO '86, the Williams College Jazz Festivals and on a trans-Atlantic voyage of the QE2. In 2004, the Coast toured to Newport, Rhode Island, and in 2007 performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
