When New York cellist Erik Friedlander was a child in the '60s, his family crisscrossed America during long summer road trips in a camper with the amenities of the show's title. Now two decades into a career that has established him as one of today's foremost jazz and new-music cellists, Friedlander plays a suite of compositions for solo cello evoking the trips' sounds, sights and atmosphere—with film directed by by Bill Morrison and a slideshow of photos from those travels taken by his father, famed American photographer Lee Friedlander. The performance, with touches of folk, roots music and Americana, is "complex, colorful... refined, virtuosic, playful, and full of energy" (JazzLoft).

Development support for Block Ice and Propane provided by The Hopkins Center, Dartmouth College; Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA); Walker Art Center; and Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University.
