The radiant melody of Tchaikovsky's Waltz from the 1882 Serenade for Strings in C Major, Op. 48, opens the concert with the excitement and flurry of a grand ball. Then, featuring special guest cellist Bonnie Thron, Shostakovich's dramatic Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat Major, Op. 107, which premiered in Leningrad in 1959, offers a spectrum of moods from sensitive to intense, highlighted by flashes of timpani. Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, one of the world's most famous, mirrors not only the composer's genius and personal struggles, but the political turmoil of early-19th-century Vienna, for a powerful and fitting finale.
