Dartmouth Wind Symphony
What is the Dartmouth Wind Symphony?
One of the premiere ensembles of the Hopkins Center, the Dartmouth Wind Symphony is a select, auditioned wind ensemble of 50 members, performing a wide variety of music from the late 19th, 20th and 21st century wind ensemble repertoire. Offering three concerts per year in Spaulding Auditorium, the DWS also gives several special event performances on and off campus. Wind Symphony concerts take on a wide variety of formats ranging from chamber to symphonic ensembles, from the traditional to the avant-garde. To date, the DWS has recorded 14 CDs and has its concerts broadcast regularly on a local, Upper Valley cable television network.
Mission Statement
The Dartmouth Wind Symphony explores the great and ever-expanding concert repertoire for wind ensemble, works ranging from chamber to symphonic, and shares this music with our community and those communities beyond the boundaries of the Dartmouth College campus through concertizing, small and large outreach projects and performances, and charitable endeavors that bring the gift of music and music making to all who welcome it.
Statement of Purpose
The Dartmouth Wind Symphony is a melting pot for the students of Dartmouth College, as well as members of the Hanover regional community. Most of our members have a major other than music at Dartmouth College, and the community musicians, professions other than music; however, each member must complete a rigorous and competitive audition for a place in the ensemble. Through this, the ensemble provides an opportunity for students to develop friendships with a more diverse group from across the Dartmouth campus, a group that shares one common goal: excellence in music making.
The Dartmouth Wind Symphony strives to educate not only the students of Dartmouth College, but also the community of audience members locally and beyond on the wind ensemble as a vehicle for exciting, high caliber performance.
