DARTMOUTH WIND SYMPHONY

The Dartmouth Wind Symphony presents concerts in Spaulding Auditorium in the Hopkins Center during the Fall, Winter and Spring terms. In addition, the ensemble gives several special event performances on and off campus. Wind Symphony concerts have a wide variety of formats, including theme concerts, chamber works, avant garde and special pieces and even silent film accompaniment. A regular program feature is the winter term exchange concert. The DWS has hosted ensembles from the following schools over the years: Columbia, Brown, Yale, McGill, Duke, Bowdoin, New England and Boston Conservatories, Gordon, Keene State and Rhode Island Colleges and MIT, WPI, UNH and UVM. Of special notice are renowned guest artists David Amram, Ken Radnofsky, Joseph Alessi, Ed Carroll, William Warfield, Peter Schickele and Phil Smith. Dartmouth students and alumni are also featured soloists. To date, the DWS has recorded 13 CDs and has its concerts broadcast regularly on television in the Hanover area.

Director: Max Culpepper, MA (trombone) Max Culpepper has been the Conductor of the Dartmouth Wind Symphony and the Director of the Dartmouth College Marching Band for 25 years. He holds BS and MA degrees from The College of New Jersey and has also directed the band and a wind ensemble at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and at Northern Illinois University. He has conducted frequently as a guest artist, and is often an adjudicator of music competitions. He was the Music Director of the Lakes Region (Vermont) Youth Orchestra for nine years and is conductor-in-residence at the Harmony Ridge Brass Center, where he performs with the principal brass players of the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
