Film Special: The Mill and the Cross
The Polish director takes us deep inside Flemish master Pieter Brueghel’s The Way to Calvary, a 16th-century Passion painting depicting more than 500 figures. From physical staging to layered CGI, Majewski’s film is a dazzling master class in visual composition as he animates a dozen characters, from carousing peasants and murderous redcoats to the painter himself. D: Lech Majewski, Poland, 2011, 92 minutes
