OUTREACH & ARTS EDUCATIONThe Hopkins Center's Outreach & Arts Education department embodies the Hop's mission to ignite and sustain a passion for the arts. It provides Dartmouth, the community and beyond rare personal contact with artists and a broad context for the performing arts. Unveiling the creative process of extraordinarily diverse artists, six Outreach programs touch more than 20,000 lives each year. HOPSTOP FAMILY SERIES:HopStops are FREE, hands-on programs designed to introduce young audiences to the wonders of the performing arts. These hour-long interactive performances are an engaging way to stimulate the curious minds of children in preschool through third grade. HopStops are offered one Saturday each month at 11 am in Alumni Hall (located on the 2nd floor of the Hop) throughout the school year, often in conjunction with Visiting Artist performances. SCHOOL MATINEE SERIES:Each year, more than 6,000 New Hampshire and Vermont K12 students and their teachers flood from yellow school buses through the doors of the Hopkins Center. Featuring artists from the Hop's Visiting Artist Series and downloadable study guides that enhance each show's educational potential, School Matinee's reveal the exciting world of performing arts. Study Guide Info Daytime performances at the Hop are for New Hampshire and Vermont K-12 school aged students and their teachers. Study Guides are provided one month in advance to enhance the educational potential of each performance. CLICK HERE to see this season's study guides. SPOTLIGHT DISCUSSIONS:Discussions between artists and audiences accompany nearly all Visiting Artist events. These engaging conversations enrich the performance experience and illuminate the artistic, social, political or spiritual aspects of the artist's work. START (STUDENT TEACHERS IN THE ARTS):In this volunteer teaching program, Dartmouth students share their passion for music, dance and theater with area school children, enriching the classroom curriculum. Student volunteers lead weekly hour-long sessions in the classroom over the course of an academic term. CLICK HERE for more information regarding the START program. VISITING ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM:Much of the learning that happens through the Hop takes place off stage, both on- and off-campus. Whether it's an intimate living room concert with a noted string quartet, a heart-pounding dance class with a leading choreographer, or a shared meal and conversation with actors from abroad, the Hop's Visiting Artist Residency Program offers Dartmouth students, faculty, staff and community members unforgettable personal interaction with artists. ASSEMBLY OUTREACH:Thousands of students in the Upper Valley have discovered the unique treat of welcoming celebrated artists and talented Dartmouth students into their own schools. The Hop offers FREE enriching mini-performances and lecture-demonstrations to grades K12 in regional schools, enhancing classroom curriculum and connecting students to live performances. CURRICULAR CONNECTIONS GUIDE:Resource for Dartmouth faculty encouraging connections between course material and Hop performances. This guide, distributed each term, offers creative ways for faculty members to supplement their classroom discussions and use the arts to convey their course themes.
