START Program(Student Teachers in the ARTs)Spring Term 07-08
What is START?The START Program (Student Teachers in the Arts) is one of six, well-established programs operated by the Outreach Department of the Hopkins Center for the Arts. In this program Dartmouth student volunteers are paired with local area teachers in public and private schools. Teachers and Dartmouth students work together to create a series of activites that wrap up after the 6 visits with a culminating experience. START is a great opportunity for Dartmouth students to do something positive for the Upper Valley community by making a difference in the lives of local school children. Information packets for area teachers and Dartmouth students are available by clicking on the links to the right. What is the time commitment? One hour per week in the classroom for one term; 6 visits total. (Including travel time to and from the schools and lesson preparation time, students should estimate a total commitment of three hours per week). LogisticsSupplies, materials, lessons and transportation available. Students of all majors welcome, some history with the performing arts preferred. Students can work with a partner or on their own. What do Dartmouth volunteers and area teachers have to say?"START was a great opportunity! I had the chance to spend time with little kids (so fun) and work on preparing lesson plans and figuring out exciting projects for them to do. The teachers were so helpful and accommodating and seemed to really appreciate the work and time we put in. The START organizers were also very helpful in giving us ideas and encouraging us to try new things." -Georgina Emerson '09 "Working with the students was the best part of the program. It gave me a chance to see my lesson planning pay off and result in excited first graders actively learning and using their creativity in the classroom. While sharing my passion for the violin and its music I learned a lot about how children respond to certain kinds of teaching and how they approach different tasks." -Jessica Yang '10 "The Dartmouth student volunteers bring arts-based activities that we might not have thought of or dared to use. We as teachers are always learning so it's nice to have the START students share fresh ideas and new perspectives." -Alice Gunderson, 1st Grade Teacher |
