Martha Clarke/Alfred Uhry

ANGEL REAPERS

World Premiere/Co-Commission

MacArthur “genius” director/choreographer/Pilobolus co-founder Martha Clarke collaborates with Pulitzer-, Tony-, and Oscar-winning writer Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy) on this work exploring the life of “Mother Ann” Lee, the powerful spiritual leader who founded the 18th-century Shaker religious movement. Her followers, strict believers in celibacy, were known for their embodied worship style brimming with dancing, shouting and a capella singing. Clarke seamlessly weaves together these elements to evoke this mystical figure and the passion—and forbidden lust—of one spiritual community.
