Wu Man, pipa

Music Department Residency

Internationally recognized master of the lute-like pipa, one of China’s most popular instruments for the past two millennia, Wu Man plays with astonishing fire and joy. Whether performing Chinese folk music or contemporary music written for her, she demonstrates “staggering mastery, drawing from her instrument a veritable symphony of sounds” (Newsday). The program includes “Ancient Dances,” a celebration of music and art featuring a guest percussionist and Chinese zheng player, and an elegantly animated calligraphy video.
