The Ceramics Studio provides facilities and instruction for students of all levels. It is equipped with a slab roller and extruder, electric potter’s wheels, glazing materials, electric and gas kilns. A wide-ranging collection of ceramic periodicals and texts are also available for use in the studio.
Instruction in handbuilding and wheel throwing is offered during the first seven weeks of each term, providing an introduction to working with clay. Students should expect to have a focused, messy time! We offer introductory sessions and simple projects which provide students with skills that can build over multiple terms. Students with previous experience and developed skills can expect a well-equipped workshop with professional staff to help them further develop form and technique.
*Beginning potter’s wheel students can expect to complete two throwing sessions (plus two trimming sessions for a total of four sessions plus glazing) before practicing on their own. Intro sessions can be waived for students with previous wheel throwing experience.
**Hand building does not require an intro session—we can help start a project any time during our open hours. We recommend that new students start with one of the many hand building projects that we offer.
The Ceramics Studio opens for Spring term on Monday, March 27.
Open to Dartmouth students with valid Dartmouth ID identifying them as such.
