START PROGRAMSTART (Students Teaching in the Arts) matches Dartmouth student volunteers with area 1st-8th grade classrooms. Over six classroom visits, volunteers develop and deliver original arts integration activities that complement regular classroom curriculum, enhancing the learning experience for students. START is active in fall, winter, and spring terms.

Dartmouth students: Fill out an application. To be considered for a Spring 2017 classroom placement, please fill out an application no later than Thursday, February 16 at 11:59 pm. After review of applications, applicants will be contacted to schedule a short interview the week of February 20–24.

Who Can Be a START Volunteer?
START volunteers are Dartmouth undergraduates who want to share their time and talent in a leadership role in a 1st-8th grade classroom. Dartmouth students apply to the START program, are interviewed, and then placed as their schedule and talents allow. Volunteers do not need to be experts in an art form but they do need to be creative and collaborative. START asks its volunteers to stretch their imaginations and the imaginations of their students. More than just arts and crafts, START wants to provide students with “outside the desk” thinking, connecting sit down subjects to on-your-feet activities. Leadership in the classroom is a must.
Who Can Be a START Classroom?
START currently works with grades 1-8 in classrooms within 25-30 minutes of the college. START visits during regular school hours for up to an hour depending on the classroom schedule. Each term the availability of the volunteers shifts and we may not always be able to accommodate a request. The more flexibility a classroom has in terms of the scheduling the more likely we’ll be able to place a START group. Classroom teachers are partners and have input into the process and give valuable feedback to the volunteers throughout their visits. Our teachers also help manage the classroom during the START visits.
At the very beginning of term, START staff place volunteers in classrooms according to expertise and schedule.
- Training: Training is mandatory and includes working in groups to develop activity plans. See calendar for dates. Partner teachers are invited to training as well. Dinner is provided.
- Meeting with Teacher: Groups travel to the classrooms to meet with teacher and review activity plan(s).
- Visits: Once a week for six weeks volunteers travel to classroom to work with students and deliver their original content.
- Group Meetings: Groups continue to meet throughout six weeks to plan and organize.
- Meeting with START Staff: After 2nd visit groups meet with START staff
- Reflection: START groups share their experience with the rest of the group and reflect on how START worked for them. Dinner is provided.
