The shop offers instruction in all aspects of woodworking including furniture design, cabinetmaking, wood turning and carving. You’ll find extensive tools and machinery, a finishing room equipped with a spray booth, and a studio for matting and framing photos, prints, posters and drawings. There is also an extensive library of texts and periodicals on furniture design and construction as well as general issues in the history of design.
Students of all levels of experience are encouraged to try out the shop (starting with a Woodworking Orientation Session, below). You could build a set of shelves, a desk or perhaps a cabinet for your video, TV and audio systems. Studio Art students might want to build canvas stretchers; engineering students might need to construct models or prototypes. Woodshop instructors are always available to help you with all aspects of your work.

Woodworking Orientation Sessions
Attendance at one orientation session will provide an introduction to the safe use of major power tools and, together with successfully completing the On-line Woodworking Safety Module, will certify students to use the Hopkins Center Woodworking Shop. Register online or at the Hopkins Center Box Office. Fee: $5

ON-LINE WOODWORKING SAFTEY MODULE
After attending one Orientation session, please go online to the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) website, log in, choose “Woodworking.”
Upon completion of the safety module, you will receive an automatic email reply. Show that reply to the Woodshop staff, and you will be certified to use shop’s power tools.
Fee includes all materials. Orientation included in each workshop.
