"Force of nature" cellist Maya Beiser meets "America's greatest contemporary ballerina" Wendy Whelan in an evening-long exploration of life and the voyage of the soul.

Amid an ethereal stage set, dancer Wendy Whelan embodies the gestural choreography of Lucinda Childs, accompanied by cellist Maya Baiser playing a score composed by Pulitzer winner David Lang. The Day reveals how we are made of memories of the large and small events that make up our daily lives—at once ordinary and unique.

It's hard to imagine a starrier group of collaborators. Whelan ("America's greatest contemporary ballerina" — New York Times), widely considered one of the world's leading dancers, spent 30 years as a principal dancer with New York City Ballet and originated numerous roles in new works by the world's most esteemed choreographers, and recently became NYCB's associate artistic director. Childs, a force in contemporary dance since the early 60s, is a Commandeur in France's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and 2018 inductee in Hall of Fame at the National Museum of Dance. Beiser (a "force of nature" — Boston Globe), who conceived The Day, is a multifaceted artist critically who has performed on the world's great concert stages and whose critically acclaimed multimedia productions have consistently been chosen for top critics' "Best Of The Year" lists. Passionate, prolific, and complicated, Lang is one of America's most performed composers, deeply versed in the classical tradition but also constantly creating new musical forms. The recording of his the little match girl passion received the 2010 Grammy Award and he has scored several Oscar-winning films. He has also shaped contemporary music as co-founder and co-artistic director of New York's legendary music collective Bang on a Can.

Stay after the performance on Friday for a post-show discussion with the artists.

The Top of the Hop Bar will be open Fri & Sat, Apr 10 & 11 starting at 6 pm. Bring your ticket for $1 off a drink; Hop Members at the Investor+ level receive a complimentary drink.

"A gut punch…. nothing short of life itself: by turns hopeful, funny, surprising and tragic."

"Memorable.... utterly relatable, The Day is music every bit as good as its idea."
