Three Hop ensembles combine to perform Britten's War Requiem

19/20 Hop Ensemble

English composer Benjamin Britten was commissioned to write this choral-orchestral work for the 1963 consecration of a London cathedral that was rebuilt after having been destroyed in Nazi blitzes. Rising to the occasion, the 50-year-old English composer gave voice to the angst of the first half of the 20th century, creating a masterpiece of emotional and moral depth and musical ingenuity. Combining the Latin Requiem Mass with the wartime poetry of British writer Wilfred Owen, the work is a moving prayer for peace that sounds every bit as relevant today as it did when first performed more than 50 years ago.
