Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble: Auditions
How do I become part of the DCWE?
Positions in the DCWE are earned by audition. All students, even upper-classmen, are required to audition at the start of each season in order to perform with the DCWE.
Sunday, Sept. 9 from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM
Tuesday, Sept. 11 from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM
Wednesday, Sept 12 from 4:30 PM to 5:50PM
What openings are available for 2018-2019 DCWE?
Since every player is required to audition in the fall term, including upperclassmen, all positions in the ensemble are considered open. The DCWE is a wind ensemble, using approximately 47-50 total musicians. This generally includes: five flutes, two to three oboes, nine to 10 clarinets, two to three bassoons, four to five saxophones, four horns, five trumpets, three trombones, two euphoniums, two tubas, five percussionists and a pianist.
If you play a secondary/harmony instrument (e.g. piccolo, E-flat clarinet, soprano saxophone, etc.), please bring it with you to the audition. If possible, please also prepare a short playing sample for that instrument; otherwise, we can simply use some sight reading material during the audition.
What do I need to do to prepare for this audition?
- One solo selection or study etude of your choice that best displays your current playing ability—at least four minutes of music
- All major scales and a chromatic scale through the complete range of your instrument
Sight-reading will also be included on all auditions
- Percussionists: please prepare samples of your playing on at least two instruments highlighting your strongest skills in the percussion section. No scales will be required, but sight-reading on a variety of instruments will be requested.
Questions about the audition process? Nervous? Unsure if you can take part?
