STEMArts Archive: Molly Herron and Engineering
In 2016-17, the Hop partnered with Dartmouth’s Thayer School of Engineering and New York composer Molly Herron, who brought a wealth of experience working with instrument-makers and an abiding curiosity about engineering. Not only did Herron visit Thayer classes and labs and meet with faculty, she co-taught a “Winterim” course with Thayer faculty members Vicky May and Ulrike Wegst, in which 8 students designed and built new instruments. Utilizing materials such as bamboo, metals, and plastic, these instruments were featured in Herron’s new work, “Assembly,” which was premiered in Thayer’s Glycofi Atrium in May, 2017 by Tigue percussion trio and guest vocalists.
