With funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Hopkins Center for the Arts commissioned a multi-site research effort in 2012 to determine how to increase college student interest and participation in the performing arts, with a focus on classical music. Supported by a team of staff and student researchers, eight partner campuses from the Major University Presenter (MUP) consortium completed 18 focus group discussions, a survey with nearly 10,000 responses, and a case study document with examples from over 20 arts institutions. The results have been compiled into a series of reports by WolfBrown, titled “Engaging Next Generation Audiences: A Study of College Student Preferences towards Music and the Performing Arts.”
The study culminated in June 2013 with a national symposium at Dartmouth College involving 60 students, faculty, administrators and presenters from 18 campuses. These representatives convened in large and small group sessions for three days to review the research and frame an action plan for bringing the arts into the lives of more college students. After a series of panels, presentations and charrette conversations, participants emerged with national Call to Action for campus-based arts presenters, accompanied by a series of recommendations in four key areas: Making Curricular Connections, Artistic Pathways in the Arts, Supporting Student Creativity and Resourcing Student Access.
