Jessica Williams is “a radiant, tall glass of dopeness” (NYT) in this delightful rom-com about an aspiring New York playwright on the rebound. She is going through what she describes as a “weird transitional phase,” not coping well with the break-up and trying to stay optimistic as rejection letters from theater companies pile up.

She sees light at the end of the tunnel when she meets Boone (Chris O’Dowd), who’s also recovering from a recent heartbreak. Together, they figure out a way to make it in a post-relationship world. O’Dowd proves a charming co-star, but it is Williams’ film—her snark and bravado are irresistible.

Programmer’s Note

We are huge fans of Jessica Williams—the incisive, hilarious and unrepentant correspondent from Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show (2012–2016). Jessica currently hosts the comedy podcast 2 Dope Queens with Phoebe Robinson and is a frequent performer at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater in LA.

It is a rare treat to present a Netflix feature on the big screen. We regularly ask for their movies, but Netflix only plans targeted theatrical screenings for Oscar qualification, driving the rest of the audience to their online platform.

But we were fortunate that local producer Michael Clark reached out to us about this film, which we were hoping to program. He will discuss the benefits and challenges of distributing an indie film through Netflix. It should make for a fascinating conversation.
