Three evenings of community building and ritual planning with social impact directors Dr. Shamell Bell & Gwen Carr (Eric Garner's mother), director Niegel Smith, and community partners
22/23 Classes & WorkshopsLed by community organizer, performer and professor Dr. Shamell Bell, this three-day workshop builds upon the seven rituals planned to precede The Ritual of Breath Is the Rite to Resist premiering in September. Through shared meals, collective reflection, and collaboration, the group will create and plan in-person and digital activations that engage other "co-conspirers" and amplify the social impact of this work. Produced by the Hopkins Center and co-commissioned by Stanford Live Arts, the opera invites audiences to rise up against the theft of Black breath, to meditate on our shared humanity, and to join in the agency of shared resistance.
Who is this for: Dartmouth students, artists, activists and organizers, and all those allied against the state-sanctioned violence against Black communities.
Ms. Gwen Carr, the mother Eric Garner, will join the workshop virtually on the 11th to be in community and reflect on the work accomplished and the work ahead.
