The Look of Love
A Hop co-commission and partnership with the Montgomery Fellows ProgramThe Look of Love
A Hop co-commission and partnership with the Montgomery Fellows ProgramA dazzling dance tribute to the timeless songs of Burt Bacharach, bursting with joy and live music.
Longtime Hop friend Mark Morris brings the music of Bacharach to life with a wistful and heartfelt homage to the composer's chart-topping songs. As always with Morris' choreography, the music is live and the dance leaps from the stage.
A towering figure of popular music, Bacharach is known for his soaring melodies and unique orchestrations influenced by jazz, rock, and Brazilian music. His longtime lyricist Hal David offers unsentimental, often bittersweet lyrics, and leading the charge with her remarkable voice is the extraordinary singer, actress and Broadway star Marcy Harriell. The band reimagines iconic hits like Walk on By, I Say a Little Prayer and What the World Needs Now with lush musical arrangements by Ethan Iverson.
The Look of Love follows the sensational success of the Beatles tribute Pepperland—another collaboration between Morris and Iverson that ran to sold-out houses at the Hop in 2019.
Don't miss Mark Morris in Conversation with John Heginbotham, former company member and Dartmouth Dance Ensemble Director on January 30 and a discussion on Bacharach's music on January 31 with Professor Steve Swayne and composer Ethan Iverson. Both pre-show talks begin at 6:30 pm in the Top of the Hop.
Mark Morris is a Montgomery Fellow and Hop Resident Artist. During his time on campus he will visit classes, have meals and discussions with students and faculty, and explore campus resources to inspire future projects.
A dancer-led masterclass will take place on the evening of January 29

Founded in New York City in 1980 by artistic director and choreographer Mark Morris, the Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG) has been called "the preeminent modern dance organization of our time" (Yo-Yo Ma), its members receiving "highest praise for their technical aplomb, their musicality, and their sheer human authenticity." (Bloomberg News). Live music and community engagement are vital components of the Dance Group, which has toured with its own musicians, the MMDG Music Ensemble, since 1996. Morris opened the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn, New York, in 2001 to provide a home for his company, subsidized rental space for local artists, community education programs for children and seniors, and a school offering dance classes to students of all ages and levels of experience with and without disabilities.
The MMDG Music Ensemble, formed in 1996, is integral to the Mark Morris Dance Group. "With the dancers come the musicians…and what a difference it makes" (Classical Voice of North Carolina). The Ensemble's repertory ranges from 17th and 18th-century works by John Wilson and Henry Purcell to more recent scores by Ethan Iverson, Lou Harrison, and Henry Cowell. The musicians also participate in the Dance Group's educational and community programming at home and on tour. The MMDG Music Ensemble is led by Colin Fowler, who began to collaborate with MMDG in 2005 during the creation of Mozart Dances.
"Mark Morris’ tribute to Burt Bacharach is what the world needs now."
