This touching, satirical Best Adapted Screenplay winner stars Jeffrey Wright as a writer whose world upends when his book lampooning Black stereotypes instead becomes a media darling.
23/24 Hop Film
Acclaimed TV writer Cord Jefferson (Succession, Watchmen) makes a triumphant leap to the big screen with his directorial debut: a whip-smart, wickedly funny and stealthily thought-provoking satire. Frustrated author Thelonious "Monk" Ellison (Best Actor nominee Jeffrey Wright) is tired of being told his work doesn't fit into the perceived canon of "Black" literature. When a fellow writer (Issa Rae) publishes an instant bestseller entitled We's Lives In Da Ghetto, an outraged Monk pours all of his bitterness into a mocking, deliberately offensive tale of poverty, crime and police brutality.
But when his book becomes a hit—and Monk's pseudonym a rising literary star—he is forced to re-examine everything he thought he believed about artistic integrity. Featuring a stellar supporting cast including Tracee Ellis Ross, Sterling K. Brown, Leslie Uggams and Adam Brody, American Fiction is a funny, touching portrait of a man attempting to finetune his relationship with the world.
