We Are Water

We Are Water

An original work by Yo-Yo Ma, Jeremy Dutcher, Mali Obomsawin '18 and Chris Newell '96 inspired by our region and commissioned for the reopening of the Hopkins Center.

This original experience—rooted in wisdom and inspired by a dream for the future—invites us to come together as a community and find hope for a changing planet.

Yo-Yo Ma and friends presented an evening of songs and stories to ask how the waters of the North — from Kwenitekw (the Connecticut River) to Supeq (the ocean) and Punkik (the Arctic North) — connecting us to each other and to our past, present and future.

Inspired by our region and commissioned for the reopening of the Hopkins Center. In collaboration with the Department of Native American and Indigenous Studies, Native American Program, Department of Anthropology, Department of Music, Department of Geography, Sustainability Office and Dartmouth House Communities.

Yo-Yo Ma is a 2025/26 Montgomery Fellow. During his time on campus, he developed the work We Are Water and engaged with Dartmouth and community members.
