Kenneth Branagh's (Henry V, Hamlet) cine-memoir is a poignant story of love, laughter and loss in one boy's childhood, amid the music and social tumult of late 1960s Belfast.
21/22 Hop Film7 Oscar Nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director
Belfast is a movie straight from Branagh's own life and the accomplished writer-director packs a staggering amount of warmth, wit and trauma into 100 minutes. A nine-year-old boy must chart a path towards adulthood through a world that has suddenly turned upside down. His stable, loving community and everything he thought he understood about life is changed forever but joy, laughter, music and the formative magic of the movies remain. The cast stars Golden Globe nominee Caitríona Balfe (Outlander), Oscar winner Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds, and introduces the ten-year-old Jude Hill. Dornan and Balfe play a passionate working-class couple caught up in the mayhem, with Dench and Hinds as the quick-witted grandparents. Belfast-born Van Morrison cements the atmosphere with a terrific soundtrack. D: Kenneth Branagh, UK, 2021, CC
"The greatest threat to this film comes not from the stink of sectarian conflict but from the aroma of sweetness"
