Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane star in this unorthodox screwball comedy about a cantor losing his faith and his 70-year-old bat mitzvah student.
Hop Film Now
Ben (Jason Schwartzman) is not doing well. Since losing his wife, he's moved in with his mothers, lost his voice and begun to lose his faith—as a cantor, that's just not kosher. Hoping to spark a love connection, Ben's rabbi introduces the cantor to his daughter, but the real connection comes after an unexpected reunion with Carla (Carol Kane), Ben's childhood music teacher. She's honest, speaks her mind and has a lust for life that rivals women half her age.
Although Ben initially balks at septuagenarian Carla's desire to become a bat mitzvah student, her off-kilter yet refreshing takes on the world prove to be the shake-up he needs to start participating in his own life. Their work studying Torah morphs into a friendship that begins to bleed into the personal as they find surprising solace in each other's presence.
Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, this wry and tender tale of unlikely friendship gives Schwartzman a chance to play a messier character than in the Wes Anderson cinematic universe, with Kane flexing her legendary comedic chops.
