The Black Book of Father Dinis
The Black Book of Father Dinis
This event occurred as part of the 20/21 Hop Film season. This is an archived view.
This sumptuous period piece traces the tumultuous fortunes of a peasant maid, whose social-climbing aspirations cross with revolutionary intrigue in 18th-century Europe.
20/21 Hop FilmNursemaid Lara is thoroughly devoted to Sebastian, the ward to a dissolute but charming nobleman. Falling hard for her employer only to have her heart broken when he seeks to marry a darling of the court, Lara is rescued by a sudden change in fortune. She's the secret daughter of a powerful clergyman, and now the world is her oyster. But this is a precarious time for the ruling class, as conspiracies and revolt spread from Rome and Venice to Paris and London.
Conceived by director Valeria Sarmiento as an appendix to the expansive literary maze of her late partner Raúl Ruiz's landmark Mysteries of Lisbon, this picaresque chronicle both enriches the earlier work and stands on its own as a grand meditation on the stories we construct about ourselves. D: Valeria Sarmiento, Portugal/France, subtitled, 2020, 1h43m
