Spies, lies and family ties: Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) finally gets her origin story.
21/22 Hop Film
Marvel Studios' recent Avenger installment finds Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) confronting the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger. Director Cate Shortland elevates this spy thriller with a "heartwarming" family reunion..of sorts. We meet Natasha's people: Russian ex-hero Alexei (David Harbour), brilliant but compromised Melina (Rachel Weisz) and Yelina (Florence Pugh) whose blend of pain and fury steals every scene.
Johansson is excellent here and every action for Natasha is tinged with acceptance and revulsion for her own nature. Black Widow becomes, kind of stirringly, a movie not about franchise extension but sisterhood, improvised families and traumatic pasts. D: Cate Shortland, US, 2021
