A gentle, bittersweet Irish charmer, Amber follows two gay teens who pretend to be in love, thus deflecting the speculation of classmates and concerned parents. Both 17 and closeted, Eddie is keen to follow his Dad into the military, while Amber wants to open an anarchist bookshop with franchise potential. As their charade continues, Amber becomes more comfortable with her queerness but the taciturn Eddie retreats inwards. Their parallel journeys dispense with a one-size-fits-all coming-out narrative and are handled with a light touch by Irish writer and director David Freyne.
Much more thoughtful than the generic title would imply, Freyne's film also has a bigger, more melancholic heart than its transatlantic counterpart, Love, Simon. Since its U.K. release on Amazon last June, Dating Amber has been fervently championed on social media by a devoted, youthful audience. Leads Fionn O'Shea (Normal People) and Lola Petticrew have an easy, intuitive chemistry and the amazing Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe) adds to the magic as Eddie's mother.
In a genre accustomed to presenting LGBTQ characters as colorful comic sidebars, Amber is a welcome sea change. Freyne has given us a romantic comedy in which the gay best friends are the leads, and it's all the richer for it. D: David Freyne, Ireland, 2020, 1h32m
