23/24 Art On Screen
The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. Why can't England's men win at their own game? Direct from a sold-out run in the West End, this brilliant fusion of sport and art seeks to answer that question.
It's the 1996 Euro semi-finals, Gareth Southgate (Joseph Fiennes, The Handmaid's Tale) has just missed the penalty that lost England their place in the competition. Fast forward to 2016 and Southgate has just been announced as the new manager for the men's national team. Beginning to select his squad, he also brings in Pippa Grange (Gina McKee), a psychologist to work on the low morale the England side has been plagued with for years. With the worst track record for penalties in the world, Southgate knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt to take his team and country back to the promised land.
