Diwali, India's biggest holiday, has become a national festival that is celebrated by both Hindu and non-Hindu communities. The festival's name comes from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes, which symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. As the holiday approaches, we invite you to get in the spirit with an Indian dance workshop taught by local dancer Nithya Ramesh. This 45-minute session for the whole family introduces several Indian dance styles, with basic steps from classical dance forms and from the folk dances gharba and bhangra. No prior dance experience or previous knowledge of Indian culture is required to participate.

Please wear clothes that allow you to move and be ready to dance barefoot. This class is recommended for ages 4 and up.
