Celebrate Lunar New Year with a special meal.

21/22 Youth & Families

Lunar New Year—also referred to as Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival (chunjie (春节)—marks the coming of spring and the planting, harvests and new beginnings it brings. Each year corresponds with one of the twelve animals from the Chinese zodiac and this year is the Year of the Tiger.

An important part of this holiday is the food! Join artist-chef Cai Xi of Cai's Dim Sum Catering and the Asian Cultural Center of Vermont as she teaches us how to make hezi, a Chinese pocket pie, from scratch. Bring some dough, savory ingredients and your family to the kitchen for conversation and laughter as we cook this delicious traditional meal.

Registration for this virtual workshop is free, but families will need to provide their own ingredients, cooking utensils and cooking equipment.

Cai Xi is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Asian Cultural Center of Vermont, the Owner/Curator/Chef of C.X. Silver Gallery and Cai's Dim Sum Catering, and a language instructor at The Putney School. Cai envisions the kitchen as a studio and food as art. She has been doing Chinese cultural and arts performances and individualized instruction for three decades. Her residencies have taken place at statewide arts events, schools, summer programs, teacher training workshops and community festivals. Cai's versatility in artmaking includes traditional Chinese brush, ink and calligraphy, abstract performance action painting, luminous landscapes, monumental portraits, mixed media installations, and socially engaged art. Her work has been presented in Boston, Manchester, and across Vermont and has been filmed live for public television, Brattleboro Community TV and New York's WNYE. Cai was also featured in the Brattleboro Museum's historic exhibition "Hot Pot: A Taste of Contemporary Chinese Art." Cai was recently featured on Cherry Bomb, a podcast on food, art and sustainability hosted by Matt McKee.
