Spencer Tracy and Frederic March go head-to-head as opposing attorneys in this blistering courtroom drama based on the famed "Scopes Monkey Trial."
Green Screen
Gutsy for its time, this 1960 film about a Tennessee educator defending himself for teaching Darwinism is powered by intelligent and impassioned speeches that border on holy zeal. Adapted from Jerome Lawrence's play, this fictionalized account of the famed 1925 "Scopes Monkey Trial" stars Spencer Tracy in a role intended to reflect the personality and beliefs of William Jennings Bryan, while Frederic March's character approximates Clarence Darrow. Bryan and Darrow, formerly close friends, opposed one another at the Scopes trial.
This film's depiction of a conservative community's resistance toward teaching science that conflicts with their views certainly echoes today. And given the current debate over other issues in school curricula around the country—from Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill to the backlash against Critical Race Theory—Inherit feels as relevant as ever.
