The Hop will be hosting three dance workshops for the Junction Dance Festival on Friday, July 17. All festival workshops are free. Advance registration helps our instructors and partner venues prepare, and walk-ins are welcome where space allows.

Tap: Rhythm & Syncopation

1:00 pm | Hop Garage 131
This workshop focuses on rhythm and syncopation. Participants will practice distinguishing rhythmic feels such as swing and straight while maintaining a consistent pulse through movement.

Bring tap shoes. Any additional footwear or floor requirements should be confirmed with the instructor or venue.

Rolling Around: Contemporary Floorwork Lab

2:30 pm | Hodgson Family Dance Studio
In this skills lab, dancers will work almost exclusively across the floor, providing plenty of runway for play, failure, and discovery. Focusing on one exercise or movement at a time, the class will progress from simple warming rolls and slides toward more adventurous weight shifts and potential inversions, eventually forming a traveling phrase.

Participants should expect to get low, sweat, and slide.

What to wear: Full-length pants and a shirt with sleeves are required. Soft knee pads may also be helpful for participants with joint sensitivity or concerns.

Whack Punk Pose: A Queer Dance Form

4:00 pm | Hodgson Family Dance Studio 
This open-level workshop explores waacking, a queer dance form rooted in the ballrooms and nightclubs of 1970s Los Angeles.

Participants will move through the history and foundations of the form, including arm technique, posing, and the cultural practices that shape its spirit. The session will close with guided creative exploration, giving dancers the opportunity to synthesize and share what they have learned.

No previous waacking experience is required.
