19/20 Art On Screen

In 1844 a Bavarian Jew arrives in New York Harbor. Soon joined by his two brothers, their American epic begins and 163 years later, the firm they establish—Lehman Brothers—spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, triggering the largest financial crisis in history.

Directed by Oscar winner Sam Mendes (Skyfall), this is a story of immigrants, showcasing American success and Jewish resilience. Three actors (Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Ben Miles), who collectively play some 70 characters, deliver virtuosic performances, chronicling the family’s soaring ascent and ultimate fall.

"It’s the miracle of three men, on a nearly naked stage, resurrecting vanished lives and worlds, leaving an oddly indelible afterglow in that final fade into darkness."
